“Trump Calls for Affirmative Action in Trade,” TODAY at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. PT)

Trump is calling for steep tariffs to “protect” the steel and aluminum industries, and for retributive tariffs more generally. Can anything but free trade be “fair” or “smart”? This and more on today’s show. See Program Notes, below, for stories, etc., I plan to discuss.

Did I call it, or what?

Headline from NYT: “Trump Stuns Lawmakers With Calls for Gun Control”

Six days ago, Trump posted a tweet full of glowing praise for the NRA. I thought it smelled, and said so then. Looks like I was right. He behaved as the perfect pragmatist, as usual, because he had a bunch of “listening sessions,” hearing everyone’s “demands.” William James would be proud.

“Trump’s Anti-Ideology Speech at the UN: A Glimpse of a World Without Philosophy,” TODAY at 3 p.m. ET (12 p.m. PT)

Yes, taken out of context, many of the things Trump said in his speech yesterday were excellent. But in this show I’ll discuss how his anti-ideology framework undermines anything good he says. A few Program Notes, below, but this will be a very focused show.
