During your discussion about the California “Climate Truth” law, I was reminded of discussion here in Vermont last spring about imposing a 2 cent per ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. One of the “experts” testifying before the legislature in favor of the law said, in response to a question about education, “Just say no to drugs, that worked really well. Um, smoking is bad for you, that worked really well. Um, so it’s just not, it’s not enough.” So, since reason wouldn’t work, we’ll use force instead. As it turned out, the legislature decided to include sodas, including diet, in the sales tax.
