Like so many others, I’m in shock this evening after hearing the news of Steve Jobs’ death. Yes, we all thought it was probably coming, given his recent retirement. But we did not know for sure, and we hoped we were wrong.
On the occasion of Jobs’ retirement, I read some quotations in this article to the effect that Jobs did not think technology would change the world. I agree that technology alone cannot, but here’s what I wrote on Twitter this evening:
Technology may not change the world; but great technology can help the right ideas to change the world more quickly. Thank you, Steve Jobs.

I’ve loved Apple under Jobs’ guidance, and I am hoping that Apple’s succession plan is as good as everything else Jobs helped to design.

I, too was shocked when I heard the news last night, which is a little strange since it was no secret that he was very sick. Still, somehow I didn’t expect him to die so soon. I figured maybe he’d make a comeback or at least hang on for another couple years.
Farewell to a great American hero.
Truly sad news. I keep thinking of the line from Gladiator, after Maximus dies, stated by Lucilla:
“Is Rome worth one good man’s life? We believed it once. Make us believe it again. He was a soldier of Rome. Honor him.” Gladiator (2000)
Mr. Jobs should be up in Heaven with the likes of Aristotle, Einstein, Newton, Aquinas, Spinoza, and, of course, our beloved Ayn Rand. He did more than “put the Internet in our pocket”. May The Lord God and His angels be merciful. Rest in eternal peace, Mr. Jobs.
